Working in the ER for the first time. Some of the nurses went on strike this morning and the police were called. The police here are part of the military and carry large automatic rifles. Strikers were told it was against the law for them to strike and that they should work or go home. Most went back to work, but the ER was short two nurses and flooded with patients. Enoch the head nurse and Augustine the hospital administrator came to the ER and worked to clear the load.
A large Arab was asked by the guard to put out his cigarette as no smoking is allowed on hospital grounds. He refused and Augustine was called. After a confrontation he put out his cigarette and we went back inside. A short time later Augustine was call again and I followed him outside. Another confrontation ensued, but since the conversation was in Arabic, I didn’t understand a word. One of the student nurses stepped up to the man, quietly spoke a few words, and held out his hand as though to received something. The man reached inside the back of his pants and handed a dagger to the student nurse. Surprise!
